When I was in college, my friend Liz and I used to see this guy who never wore a coat. It could be below freezing and snowing, and this guy would still be gallivanting about campus with nothing more than a tshirt covering his upper body. We nicknamed him The Coatless Wonder because, honestly, it was kind of amazing how little weather meant to him. Also, he looked dumb.
The moral of this story? Don’t be like The Coatless Wonder. Wear a winter coat.
I only learned the value of a real winter coat this year. Sure, I owned coats. Actually, lots of them! But I didn’t purchase a single one of them for warmth. Instead, I bought them because I liked the color, or because they made me look thin, or because they were on sale, or for any other variety of reasons that had nothing at all to do with a coat’s actual purpose–keeping me warm.
This year, I decided to go for a coat that actually, you know, protected me from winter. So I looked in the Lands End catalog (which my menswear obsessed brother gets in the mail), found a coat that was specifically designed to be warm, and bought it.
Do you know what it’s like to wear a real winter coat after years and years of wearing trenchcoats, or jackets, or barely-lined pea coats? It’s like the moment when you take off your heels after a long night. It’s like the moment when you can put on yoga pants after wearing tights all day. It made me think, “Oh, this is what coats are for.” Basically, wearing a winter coat is revolutionizing my life. I can be outside when it’s cold. It’s fantastic.
Drake is a man who, clearly, knows all about the importance of wearing a coat. I mean, look at him up there with that fur-lined hood. The man knows what’s up. There’s nothing stylish about being uncomfortable because you didn’t dress appropriately for the weather, and even someone who’s 25 sitting on 25 mill can appreciate that.
In case you’re curious, I bought the Cire Down Coat in black. It’s almost to my knees, can zip up to my chin, and has a hood. It’s also rated “warmest” because Lands End means business. It’s not nearly as shiny as it appears in the picture, and it isn’t as pouffy as many down coats. Also, right now it’s on super-sale, so I would highly recommend snatching it up. Whatever you do, never ever ever pay full price for anything from Lands End. They have sales almost constantly, so you can often get things for at least 30% off.
Don’t be like The Coatless Wonder, you guys. Change your life. Buy a winter coat.
I’m wearing tights right now and all I want to do is take them off and put on yoga pants. They’re feeling even tighter now that I’ve read this post. Quit writing the truth!
