Lady Jam: Simple Kind of Life, No Doubt

Awhile ago, I was watching Daria clips on Youtube even though I own the DVD set. It’s important to note this because, while the DVD had to change the music for copyright reasons, the Youtube clips still have those sweet, sweet 90′s/early 2000′s sounds. That’s where I heard No Doubt’s Simple Kind of Life, which I’d completely forgotten about.

Return of Saturn got some serious play in my 8th grade bedroom, and I especially loved this song. I’m pretty sure that 8th grade me didn’t necessarily appreciate the meaning behind the lyrics, and I definitely didn’t realize that the lights behind Gwen Stefani and the drummer are supposed to represent birth control pills. This song is surprisingly honest. What woman my age doesn’t think about where having kids fits into her career? Lines like “I always thought I’d be a mom” and “The longer that I wait the more selfish that I get” are incredibly sad. I think Gwen Stefani might be kind of stupid (she’s done so many inadvertently racist things and said so much dumb stuff about feminism), but she wrote this song, so I guess she’s not all bad.
Also, there are worse things you could do with your time than watch Tom and Daria clips on Youtube. What a love triangle, right?

It always bums me out that the DVDs don’t have the original music! I still watch them over and over, but it’s just not quite the same…
