Lady Style: Curly Hair Inspiration

curly hair kerry
I’ve always had curly hair, as you can see in this picture. I’ve also, clearly, always had a sweet sense of style and charm for days, but that’s neither here nor there. I spent most of my adolescence trying to style my curls into submission. I’d blow dry them, use a straightening iron, and do everything I could to stay out of the rain. All this despite the fact that curly hair was, you know, what was naturally sprouting out of my head.

Somewhere along the way I ditched my straightener and decided I’d wear my hair as naturally as possible as often as possible. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with spotting curly haired celebrities. They’re few and far between, because even stars that have curly hair usually opt to straighten it. Just look at Justin Timberlake…a star of stage and screen, sure, but a traitor to the curl cause all the same.

But that doesn’t mean famous curly-haired people aren’t out there! I’ve never met a curl I didn’t like, but here are some of my favorites, from today and from my childhood:

Andie MacDowell in Groundhog Day
Groundhog day
I loved Groundhog Day as a kid, and I was entranced by Andie MacDowell’s impossibly huge hair. Of course, I was watching this back in the days when I had no idea how to style my hair, and my mom used to put it in foam rollers every night and comb it out every morning. I was convinced that if I could just style my hair like this, I’d probably get Bill Murray to fall in love with me. Frankly, I’m still waiting for that to happen.

Bernadette Peters in The Jerk

There isn’t a day that I don’t wake up hoping I’ve magically been transformed into Bernadette Peters. Not only was she another woman with a weird voice, but she had the most glorious short curly ‘do. She even had curly bangs, for God’s sake!

Annie Clark/St. Vincent
St. Vincent (Annie Clark)
I think Annie Clark might be one of the most beautiful women in the world, which is only made more annoying by the fact that she’s an incredibly talented musician AND the owner of some of the most fabulous hair ever. Her look says, “I have way more important things to worry about than straightening my hair.”

I love that Lorde’s bringing wild, big, curly hair back. I also respect her deep side part. Not everyone can pull a look like that off.

Okay, so Solange is one of my style inspirations and I always love her look. She wears her hair in a ton of different ways and looks gorgeous in all of them, but this big, curly look is one of my favorites.

Weird Al

I mean, obviously.

Lady Jam: ‘Losing You,’ Solange

You might know how I feel about Solange (very strongly in favor). I love her makeup, her clothes, her hair, her attitude, and just about everything about her. Including her new song, Losing You, which I can’t stop listening to:

Everything about this song is fantastic; it’s been stuck in my head all day. And the video? Holy moly, I could look at Solange’s gorgeous outfits for days. She’s painfully beautiful and I love her style: bright colors, mixing prints, menswear, she does it all.
You can read more about the video here if you’re so inclined.

Wednesday Links (Relating to Solange Knowles)

Sorry, guys, all I care about right now is Solange Knowles.

This article by Kate Spencer was on HelloGiggles yesterday, and it pretty clearly outlines why Solange is the best human being ever.

Her blog is called My Damn Blog, and it’s full of pictures of her looking gorgeous. I mean, that outfit in the picture above? I need it!

And obviously Sandcastle Disco is the best song ever recorded.

Oh, and she was on Yo Gabba Gabba because DUH OF COURSE SHE WAS.

I used to think Beyonce was the most beautiful woman in the world, but now I just don’t know what to think. I hope you guys will support me in my time of questioning.
